LETTER - Hazard at Cape Lazo beach an easy fix, if Town would allow it

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

There is an ongoing safety situation at the beach entrance to Cape Lazo.’

A part of access to the beach is on Town of Comox property. It is a hazard. The town said that it’s not in the budget to fix up. A local business, for free, offered to clean up and even build stairs to make it easier for kids, dogs and disabled people like myself, to have a comfortable way to the beach.

Comox town won’t let them do it because of insurance liabilities. That is not an acceptable argument.

I have seen dogs and little kids and heathy people climb over this log and get hurt; where is the insurance then? Common sense tells you someone is going to get really hurt. Did the council ask the insurance company to investigate the area and think through the idea of someone helping? I would say no because it’s a natural policy to say, “it’s an insurance thing.”

All I am asking is a big log cut the size of a doorway and a few natural stone steps. It’s really nothing. This would take three hours to fix up and that’s with a half-hour break. I can go down with a chainsaw, if I had one, cut the log and take the consequences because it would save someone from getting hurt.

I have been here for about a year and a half, and I go to this area of the beach most days, year-round. I know maybe only 10 people a day take this route. And yes it is a small matter to some people but using insurance policy as an excuse is a problem with towns all over.

Let the business fix it up, out of concern for kids, dog walkers, disabled and old people. Then put up a poster saying “Use at your own risk,” which I see enough already.

Randolph Healey,

Comox
