Seventeen members of the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club brought home medals and top-10 results at the Western Canadian Championships in Kelowna — which attracts over 500 of the most competitive cross country ski racers from across western Canada and the western U.S.

Oak Bay, Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Victoria host Island championships this weekend

On Feb. 1 and 2, the joint senior girls basketball team comprised of école Au-coeur-de-l’île (ACDI) and Highland Secondary players hosted an invitational basketball tournament.

The Highland Raiders junior girls basketball team placed fifth at the Island championship at Belmont Secondary in Langford on the weekend.

Ladysmith hosts Island championship this weekend

Graham Forsyth of the Comox Valley Road Runners was the top local runner at the Cobble Hill 10k — the second event in the Vancouver Island Race Series — running 36:19 for fifth-place in his age group. Jonathan Noel was 20 seconds behind for sixth in the same age group. The top local woman was once again Aislinn Deenihan, finishing in 42:08 for fourth in her age group.

Vanier beat host Isfeld Ice in final

The year the 55+ BC Games will be held in Kelowna, Sept. 10-14.

Nicolette Vinnedge played for the B.C. Rugby girls youth team that competed over the weekend at the Western Canadian Sevens Championships in Edmonton. The Comox Valley product was on the BC Rugby U17 team that competed last August at nationals in Winnipeg.

Due to snow on roads, the triple-A senior boys North Island Basketball Tournament will start this evening (Friday) at Isfeld Secondary, one day later than originally scheduled.
