On Saturday, May 10, the Glacier Grannies will be holding their Spring Sale from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, in the upper car park of Comox United Church, 250 Beach Drive.
They are following their tradition of holding our sale on the day before Mother鈥檚 Day, and in good time for starting summer gardens.
Customers will be entertained with live music from the Swing Valley Two, as they browse and buy vegetable and herb starts, perennials and house plants, gently-used items, fashion jewellery, and lots of home baking. This is also a chance to support local artisans by purchasing our crafts, and pottery made in Comox.
The Glacier Grannies raise funds for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Part of the global AIDS response, the Campaign has been working in solidarity with African grandmothers and community-led organizations in 14 countries since 2006. As their own children died, grandmothers stepped forward and took up the challenge of raising their orphaned grandchildren, caring for their physical and emotional needs, and helping them through school.
While they continue to support their own grandchildren, grandmothers have now become community leaders, teaching AIDS prevention, supporting those living with the condition, and battling the stigma that still surrounds the disease. Grandmothers have also become advocates for change, fighting for their human rights and those of their families. By supporting grassroots community-based organizations, the Glacier Grannies are with them every step of the way.
With the present uncertainty in funding through USAID and the disruption in the delivery of antiretroviral drugs, the community-led organizations funded through the Foundation are in dire need. Your purchases will make a difference to the African grandmothers and their communities. Every dollar raised will go to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.
