Soon thousands of golf balls are going to roll down Dunsmuir avenue in Cumberland.

Cumberland Community Schools Society is announcing their annual Thunderballs fundraiser.

This beloved Cumberland tradition is a token lottery featuring 4,000 golf balls rolling down the main street in an exciting race to win one of 21 fabulous prize packages. This year’s top prizes include one round trip flight for two guests to any regularly scheduled and marketed WestJet destination, and a Dreadnought V2 Fox framekit donated by local bike brand Forbidden Bike Company. Other prizes include cash, mini-vacations, festival tickets, local food gift cards, and more.

Proceeds from the event support the Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS), a registered charity that provides nutritious meals and food hampers to residents experiencing food insecurity, along with barrier free recreational programs. Thunderballs is the Society’s biggest fundraiser, and plays a vital role in funding operations. “The success of this event is key to ensuring we can continue to meet the growing needs of our dynamic community”, says Sue Loveless, Executive Director. “Over the past year we have seen a significant increase in demand for our services as residents struggle to navigate the high cost of living. Our goal is to raise $55,000 through Thunderballs sponsorships and ticket sales to ensure we can continue to provide these essential programs”.

Over sixty local businesses have generously stepped up to support the event, through financial contributions and donations of prizes. Forbidden Bike Company is this year’s platinum sponsor, and gold sponsors include Cloutier Matthews Chartered Professional Accountants, Hyland Precast, Facet Custom Builders, and WestJet.

Thunderballs tickets are 1 for $10, or 5 for $40 and available from CCSS staff and board members, Moon’s Records, and Seeds Food Market. Tickets will also be available at the Repair Cafe (Saturday April 26), Cut A Thon (Sunday May 4) and the CCSS Market Day Booth (Saturday May 17th). The event will be held in downtown Cumberland on Monday May 19 before the big parade.
