LETTER - ‘Xenophobic’ editorial cartoon insulting to reader

Dear editor,
21838152_web1_CVR-letters1

Dear editor,

I was deeply dismayed to see the cartoon on page 10 (June 10 Comox Valley Record) depicting a calm Canadian home and a chaotic American home. Although I have seen similar internet memes, I never thought such a clearly xenophobic image could be printed in a newspaper.

I understand the intent of lampooning politics or editorializing crisis situations with comics but this image is untimely, unhelpful and unkind. Frankly, I believe it is unacceptable to taunt those who are struggling, including those singled out by their ethnicity, nationality or geographic location, nor is it acceptable to flaunt our current more advantageous circumstances.

I believe a retraction would be appropriate.

Brad Little,

Courtenay
