Dear editor,
I am continually amazed at the unbridled spending of taxpayers’ money from all levels of government over the past several years and, to be honest, concerned about the future.
It must be nice to have a never-ending supply of money: middle-class wage earners. It’s pretty easy for politicians to increase taxes rather than make the tough decisions about saving money, maybe cutting programs, or not buying that new jet or car, etc.
The reason these decisions are not made is because they want to get re-elected. It’s not about what is good for all any more. We have many promises from politicians, Horgan crowing about making life affordable, ̨MM’s middle-class tax cut that amounts to about $20 per month.
From personal experience, let’s see how that is working out. Carbon tax has increased the cost of living substantially, especially food at about 20 to 30 per cent. (Further to this, ̨MM’s half-truths about this tax being returned to taxpayers in the form of rebates. This does not apply to B.C.).
This has a huge impact on fixed income people. This month I have increases of 20 per cent on my property insurance and 25 per cent on my Town of Comox property taxes. Every program implemented by all governments has the consequence of increased cost and the heaviest burden on those with fixed income. Someone needs to explain to me, economically, how this is sustainable for anyone.
I think it’s about time that we must demand accountability, transparency and a wholesale review of all programs, services, procurement programs, etc. that all levels of government are, at the least, guilty of poor judgment and decision-making.
We have to start living within our means as middle-class Canadians cannot continue to shoulder an ever-increasing percentage of this burden. We haven’t even begun to pay for COVID-19. What is that going to look like? I, personally, am tired of being told “it’s a small increase, it’s only a dollar a day.” The dollars are running out.
Kevin Bogdan,
Comox
