Dear editor,

It’s come to my attention that there is offence being taken with regards to the two-page spread using an Indigenous Canadian flag.

RELATED… LETTER – Reader takes offence with Record’s choice of Canada Day flag

On top of that, there was mention that there was a piece asking if the flag was actually creating an issue. I am an Indigenous man who lives works and plays on the unceded territory of the Komox First Nation - traditionally from Nuu-chat-laht and Carrier First Nations, respectively. I understand the importance to historical significance and appreciation of what Canada is. However for what we’ve become, the ability to voice our thoughts and opinions is paramount to connecting and feeling equally heard seen and valued.

I’ve learned that my background as with anyone’s should be celebrated; shouted from rooftops if one should wish.

Expression of appreciation and acknowledgement of others is what I feel the intention behind the spread was. Not meant to displace or discourage or to demean. Understanding that even if one is different, are we not one and the same? I applaud the boldness and courage of our newspaper team to go outside the norm. Recognizing intentions instead of preconceptions of ill will is what makes our differences as well as what makes us human is what Canada means to me. If you disagree, by all means, that is your right. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to read one person’s innermost thoughts.

Rock on, Comox Valley Record

Sherwin Strong,

Comox Valley
