Even remotely connecting Sierra Club with child bullying is preposterous

Dear editor, I’m writing in regard to letter of Mr. Steven Baird, managing director of Street Smart Kidz Canada (Comox Valley Record, May 20).

Dear editor,I’m writing in regard to letter of Mr. Steven Baird, managing director of Street Smart Kidz Canada (Comox Valley Record, May 20).  First, to even remotely connect the Sierra Club with a campaign to abuse Mr. Procter’s family or to bully, threaten, spit on or swear at children is preposterous and misguided rhetoric.  Our organization is, for the most part, made up of parents and grandparents. Many of us, including the Bell family, have experience of our children being bullied. We are sincerely sorry that the Procter’s family has had similar experiences.  But we are also offended that Mr. Baird would associate our organization with such abuse.   Second, Mr. Baird has obviously been taken in by Mr. Procter’s claim that he has never been approached to buy his property. Not true. I have had two conversations with Mr. Procter on this subject.  Hopefully, Mr. Baird will check his facts in the future and confer with us if he has concerns about our activities. We also note with interest that he recognizes “this project should have been voted down years ago,” and we remain ready to collaborate with anyone interested in saving the estuary.   We appeal once more to Mr. Procter. It is not too late to listen to and co-operate with the community. Go ahead with your restaurant and convenience/ liquor store, but build your gas station in a more suitable place. As the recent Malahat spill into the Goldstream River has demonstrated, gasoline leaking or spilling into a fish-bearing stream can cause irreparable damage. The same thing could happen here in our estuary.A spill would also set back the many efforts of environmental groups, community groups and school children working to restore habitats for the species that would pass by the front door of the Gas N Go station on their spawning runs.Mr. Procter’s assurances of the latest gasoline station technology in that particular location cannot guard against natural hazards and human error. Mike BellEditor's note: Mike Bell is the co-chair of Sierra Club Comox Valley.
