The Phil &Jennie Gaglardi Academy boys had a historic experience over the weekend, as they were the school’s first-ever team to qualify for the provincial volleyball championships.

Seven Members of the Comox Valley Sharks Masters swim club ventured down to Nanaimo Nov. 16 for the Ebbtides Swim Meet and performed admirably.

Comox judoka Dakota Sanzana, 13, gained some valuable experience at a training camp in Cuba, under the tutelage of Cuba’s former national women’s team coach Ronaldo Veitia. Her trip included a training session at the Olympic Judo Training Facility with previous Olympic champions, world champions and future Olympians.

The Comox Valley United Soccer League Div. 2 men’s team is hosting its third annual Tom Butcher Memorial Indoor Tournament, Dec. 20-22 at the 19 Wing base gym.

Comox Valley United continued to roll into the half-way mark of the Vancouver Island Soccer League season with an 8-0 record.

The MOWI Riptide soccer program started last weekend Friday night at Merle Logan in Nanaimo, where the U14 girls played the U14 Storm. The game was 1-1 at the half, but the Storm prevailed 3-1 in the end.

It is an exciting time for women in sports, with the number of female athletes at the Olympic Games approaching 50 per cent. Here in the Valley, there are two local women’s hockey teams and a 55+ team that open the door for female empowerment through sport.

Gaglardi Academy’s senior boys’ volleyball team has had an exceptional season this year. For the first time in the school’s history, their team earned a spot in the 2019 ‘A’ Volleyball Provincials tournament.
