On Feb. 28, and running all weekend in West Kelowna at Telemark Nordic Ski Club, Strathcona Nordic Ski Club had a great time at the final Teck BC Cup weekend. The Teck BC Cup Championships began on Friday and featured three days of racing.

Over 675 racers were registered at the Championships and 34 clubs were represented. Athletes ranged in age from seven to 77 and came from all over B.C., Alta., Quebec, Ontario, and Washington State. In stark contrast to the previous BC Cup #2 race in Prince George three weeks earlier, the temperatures were quite warm and there were an impressive 50 racers from Strathcona Nordic Ski Club.

The races were all tough under the blazing sun; on Friday it was a mass start and free technique race, ranging in distances from 1.0 km - 10 km. Saturday brought an interval start classic race of 1.0 km - 7.5 km and the last day had the super fun relay free technique with distances ranging from 3 x 1.0 km to 3 x 3.3 km.

The temperatures during these races were around 10° but felt a lot higher, especially with the climbs on the courses. The grooming was excellent but challenging; the snow, being hard-packed in the shade but sloppy and slow in the sun, presented challenges for the racers, especially on the downhill sections. There was at least one rumour of a racer ending up in the trees.

An awards ceremony took place on Saturday evening. Congratulations to Soren Jakobsen, Amelia Moore, Gavin Chatterton, Anna Chatterton and Coach Bertrand Hamoumraoui for winning the top B.C. Cup Series Individual Aggregate Awards in their age categories, to Mariana Smith for coming second in her age category and to every other racer for participating.

Strathcona Nordic Ski Club finished in 6th place for the 2025 Club Championship Trophy.

This event could not have succeeded without the help of all the coaches, parents, volunteers, and our dedicated waxing and wax testing team of Paul Chatterton and Andrew McInnis.

The last races of the season are coming soon: Ski Nationals at Canmore Nordic Centre and the Mt. Washington Loppet on home snow.
