The second and third Teck Coast Cup races took place on February 8 and 9 at the Mount Washington Ski Resort.
The Strathcona Nordic Ski Club hosted the event which, in addition to their own members, welcomed racers from the Vancouver Island Biathlon Club, Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club, Nordic Racers, Sovereign Lake Nordic Club and Rocky Mountain Racers.
Skiers ranging in age from 4 to 74 years competed over the two days of racing. Sunny skies and cool winter temperatures provided excellent conditions for cross country ski racing throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, the sunny conditions showcased the glorious mountains of Strathcona Park, providing an excellent backdrop for the Team Sprint. A total of 98 racers paired up to compete in this Free Technique event. Sunday brought more variable cloud conditions and a last-minute change from the planned Classic Technique race to a Free Technique, Mass Start race due to a mechanical issue. Despite the change, 115 racers came out for races that ranged in distance from 300 metres to 7.5 kilometres, and embraced the challenge with big smiles.
Members of the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club youth race teams have participated in races across the province this season, travelling to Vernon, Rossland, Revelstoke, Kimberley and Prince George. They will race at the BC Championships in Kelowna later this month, and wrap up the season with Nordiq Canada’s National Championships in Canmore, Alberta in March.
The local races could not happen without the support of Cross Country BC and a large group of dedicated local volunteers and coaches.
"A huge thank you to all the people who made the Coast Cup weekend a success! Strathcona Nordic Ski Club looks forward to hosting the annual Vancouver Island Loppet on Saturday, March 22 at Mount Washington," a release from the club says.
