After an extended break due to weather conditions, both the Comox Valley Kickers women's and men's rugby teams returned to action on March 1.
Despite the challenges of disrupted training schedules and postponed or cancelled games, the teams gave it their all in their respective match-ups.
Originally set to play at home, the Kickers women's game was relocated to Nanaimo after Cumberland Village Park remained closed. Despite the last-minute venue change and a shaky start, the team quickly found their rhythm and delivered a dominant 53-5 victory. The Kickers displayed a well-rounded performance with tries from Sophia Julien (3), Cali McKay (2), Daris Forberg (2), Sienna Stigant, and Lauren Sargent. Shayla Stigant and McKay combined to add 4 successful conversions, solidifying the impressive win. The team showcased strong ball movement and coordination, making a statement as they returned to the field in their first game since November.
Head Coach JB Nikkel praised the team’s effort and adaptability.
“It was a rough start, but once we settled in, we played some really great rugby," he said. "Our set pieces and handling were well executed. With a mix of experienced players and young talent, the team is starting to build chemistry on the field which will continue to grow as the season progresses."
Meanwhile, the Kickers men's team travelled to Victoria to face off against the UVic Vikes. It was a tough outing for the squad as they suffered a 103-7 defeat against a sharp and disciplined UVic side. Huw Griffiths scored the lone try for the Kickers, with Kyle Hall successfully adding the conversion. The team struggled to build momentum and keep up with the pace of their opponents, who were very disciplined and who capitalized on every opportunity. Despite the difficult loss, the players remained determined and will look to regroup for their next challenge.
Team Captain Brandon Hudson acknowledged the challenges faced in the match. “UVic played a high-tempo game, and we had a hard time keeping up. We know we need to tighten up our defense and improve our decision-making under pressure,” he said.
With the long break behind them, both teams are eager to continue their seasons with renewed focus and energy. On March 8, the women’s team are set to host Cowichan Piggies RFC, while the men’s team have a bye.
