As the season changes from winter to spring, it’s time to consider all the outdoor and sports activities the Comox Valley has to offer.
One way to take care of three of those sports and activities is to sign up for the 39th annual Shoreline Orthodontics Tri-K Triathlon. It is an annual race event for kids, youth, and adults to have fun, be active, and get involved.
Triathlons are made up of three legs, a swim, a bike and a run. The swim will take place at the Comox Valley Sports Centre, the bike course will either be on local roads or at the Vanier school grounds (depending on age group), and the run will loop out to the Exhibition trails.
There are a variety of race distances that are age- and skill-appropriate. All events can be entered as an individual with some age categories offering team entries.
The event is on Sunday, May 25. Races for ages 12 and up start at 7:45 a.m. with actual starts depending on the racer’s age and distance goals. Kids ages 4 to 11 start at 1:30 p.m.
The kids’ event is fun and supportive with participation ribbons presented at the end of the race.
The 12 through adult aged morning events are timed and have race ranking medals based on gender and age groupings. Adult events also have options for participating in just a run-bike (duathlon), swim-bike (aquabike), or a swim-run (aquathlon). There is also a “Just-Tri-It” category with introductory distances. For a greater challenge, try the adult ‘Standard’ triathlon distance of a 1,500 metre swim, 40 km bike, and a 10 km run.
“This event offers the community a fun event to give it a ‘tri’” said Terry Hooper, the Race Director. “The Tri-K has a long history in the Valley with great support from the participants, community volunteers, and sponsors. We welcome everyone to come out and take part as a racer or volunteer – and encourage spectators to also come to see the action!”
Volunteers are always needed and appreciated for the morning or afternoon event – or both. If you or someone you know would be interested, all the volunteer information and sign up is at trik.ca as well.
The event registration will close on May 20, but registering before the end of April will guarantee an event t-shirt with your selected sizing. Registration information is at trik.ca.
