Comox Valley wrestlers take to the mat in provincial championships

Future is bright for Comox Valley wrestlers

Twenty three Comox Valley Wrestlers were in action representing their home schools at The BCSS Provincial Championships.

This year the Provincial Championship (PNE Vancouver) hosted over 750 wrestlers from secondary schools all over the province, competing for top honours in each weight class.

The G.P. Vanier Girls team lead the way for the Comox Valleys schools with four Provincial Place winners. They followed up last year’s third place finish by earning 3rd as a team for a second consecutive year. This year the difference between first place and third place was a single team point in a very close team race.  Guildford Park and Semiahmoo both scored 32 points while the Vanier team scored 31. Kylie Cameron-Pattison lead the team with an incredible Silver Medal performance. Jolina Healey improved on her sixth place finish from last year to take a hard-fought bronze medal this year Inga Hollmayer finished with a bronze medal in her very first Provincial Tournament as an eigth grader. Thea Spragg put together an amazing run at this year’s tournament placing sixth, also as a grade 8 athlete. The future is bright for the G.P. Vanier Team as all four place winners will return next year, joined by the six additional Vanier wrestlers that each earned victories in this year’s tournament.

Ryan Nasadyk of Highland Secondary notched six victories on the weekend to finish with his second provincial placement taking fifth place in a very large and competitive bracket.

Mark R Isfeld sent five wrestlers to the Provincial Championships, its largest contingent of wrestlers in recent history, ranging from Grade 8 through 12. All of the Isfeld wrestlers fought great battles on the mat with 10 victories amassed for them as a team.

The SD 71 wrestling team will return 16 of the 23 provincial qualifiers on the team this year to continue to vie for provincial honours next season. Eight of those returning athletes are in grade 8 and won two medals and amassed 16 wins between them in their first time competing at provincials  Daniel Ingrey, Aiden Skea, and Jake Stuve all return for Highland Secondary. Hugh Hyndman, Nathan Malouin, and Oscar Stehura Will be back next year for Isfeld. Kane Acton, Kylie Cameron-Pattison, Aysia D’Alessandro, Piper Eastman, Jolina Healey, Inga Hollmayer, Max Korthuis, Rhiannan Macdonnell, Lily Martin, Thorn Duprey, and Thea Spragg will return for Vanier.

The coaches and their teammates would like to thank the graduating members of the team for their dedication and the hard work that they have put in to make the program flourish the way that it has, and we wish them continued success as they continue their journeys.
