The Comox Valley wrestlers competed in Vancouver Island Secondary Schools Championships on Saturday Feb. 8 at Queen Margaret’s School in Duncan. Twenty-three SD 71 wrestlers placed in the top five at the championship to qualify to represent the Island at the Provincial Championships. Ten Valley wrestlers made the championship finals matches with six winning individual Gold Medals.
Alongside the incredible individual success, the Highland, Isfeld, and Vanier teams all placed in the top eight in the team score with Vanier earning runner-up finishes in both the Girls Team Category and the Boys and Girls Combined Team Category.
Jacob Price capped off an incredible day of his own by capturing his second Island Championship in such dominant fashion that he was named the Male Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Island Championships.
The G.P. Vanier team had four individual champions in Inga Hollmayer, Jacob Price, Jolina Healey, and Kylie Cameron-Pattison. All four won gold medals on the day. Lexi Acton finished with a Silver Medal and Kane Acton, Thea Spragg, Aysia D’Alessandro, and Max Korthuis finished with Bronze Medals. Piper Eastman, Lily Martin, and Rhiannen Macdonnell all placed in the top five to secure their place in the Provincial Championships.
The Highland Secondary team had a banner day with three championship finalists and five provincial qualifiers overall. Kadence Johnson won the first individual wrestling title for Highland in the last ten years. Ryan Nasadyk and Aiden Skea both earned hard fought silver medals. Simon Roberge and Daniel Ingrey brought home third and fourth place honours respectively to qualify for provincials.
Mark R. Isfeld team also came away with five provincial qualifiers. Nathan Malouin earned a Silver Medal for the second time in his career. Quinn Hoar and Coady Frisch secured their spot in the championships with Bronze Medals. Oscar Stehura and Hugh Hyndman took fourth and fifth place to punch their tickets to Vancouver as well.
Tristen Beaudrey won his second Island Gold Medal representing Self Design, a national home school.
The 2025 BCSS Wrestling Provincial Championships take place from Feb. 20 to 22 at the PNE Forum in Vancouver.
