LETTER: Just because there is a Canada Sticker, does not mean it's Canadian

Not every product with a maple leaf sticker is made in Canada

Dear editor,

With the tariffs from the U.S., we all are looking to support Canada and Canadian jobs. Recently I received two flyers from two different grocery stores. Both had Maple leafs on a number of products. Both had sales on Mr. Christie cookies. One store had a maple leaf on Mr. Christie’s cookies. One store did not have a maple leaf on Mr. Christie Cookies.

Mr. Christie cookies were founded by a Canadian but has not been a Canadian Company since 1928 when it sold to Nabisco of Chicago. The former Mr. Christie’s brand name has been sold many times to different companies including General Mills, Kraft and Tobacco companies like RJ Reynolds and Phillip Morris. Mr. Christie's name is currently held by MondelÄ“z of Chicago.

I went to look at the Mr. Christie cookies in the grocery store marked as Canadian in the flyer. All Mr. Christie cookies on the shelf have a Maple leaf beside it. I picked up a number of packages, none said made in Canada. The Oreo thins reads imported Christie Brown & Co. I asked a person in the store and they tried to argue the Maple leaf sticker being there is supporting Canadian jobs. That grocery store even has their own store brand of cookies made in Canada. Mr. Christie is Canadian only in name.

I will be very careful when shopping to really buy Canadian products in that store.
