For 30 years, the Comox Valley Citizens on Patrol Society (COPS) has been watching our streets and neighbourhoods, as well as acting as the extra eyes and ears for the RCMP, to help deter crime in local communities.
Starting in 1994, this volunteer group started patrolling our neighbourhoods in conjunction with the local RCMP. Using simple car radios to communicate with each other, members monitored speed, watched high crime areas, and assisted the RCMP with their activities and events as they occurred. They also worked with the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox, and the regional district during special events, such as parades and celebrations.
"Much has changed in 30 years but our members still patrol and monitor speed in troublesome areas. Some of our members have been with the society for over 25 years and three members have been with the group for 30 years," a release from the group says. "It says a lot about an organization to retain volunteers for so long."
"If you would like to contribute to the safety of our community, we are always looking for more volunteers," a release from the group says.
The next AGM will be held on January 26, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Those who are interested in becoming a member or would like to attend the AGM, can contact CV COPS at cvcops@telus.net or call 250-897-1443.
