This spring, many individuals and families in the Comox Valley are facing rising grocery costs; fortunately, this is the perfect time of the year to flex your green thumb and grow your own food.

Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a cozy little balcony, there are many things you can grow to make your grocery shopping lighter and your meals fresh and tasty. If you’re just dipping your toes into the gardening world, many local organizations, such as LUSH Valley, the Comox Valley Horticultural Society and local libraries, conduct low-cost workshops on topics such as crop planning, seed starting, drought-resilient gardening, beekeeping, canning and more.

For novice or experienced gardeners, LUSH is hosting a workshop on Seed Starting with Arzeena Hamir from Amara Farm on Tuesday, April 29. If you are interested in learning all about bees, LUSH is offering a four-week movie beekeeping course with certified bee master Wendi Gilson of Black Horse Apiary. For those who are interested in working with their hands, workshops on eco-dyeing, cob building and carpentry are also available.
