Are you a young writer who draws inspiration from theatre or live performance, or who wants to work on their dialogue skills?

This summer, playwright Marcus Youssef will be the McLoughlin Gardens Society’s 2020 writer-in-residence. On Aug. 20, Youssef will lead a one-day workshop for young writers focusing on dialogue, and character-driven writing and storytelling.

The workshop will be held outside, in and amongst the gardens on the secluded grounds of the Brian and Sarah McLoughlin Regional Park at Williams Beach in Merville. In order to ensure comfortable physical distancing, the workshop will be limited to 10 writers.

The 2017 winner of Canada’s prestigious Siminovitch Prize for playwriting, Youssef also writes screenplays, prose, journalism and creative non-fiction, as well as for online-performance. The workshop is open to writers in any of these, and the exercises and discussion will be adapted to participants’ preferred genres.

Those interested should send a short email addressing the following questions:

What do you like to write most, in terms of genre?

What’s something you’ve watched (TV, film, live theatre, online) recently that you’ve loved and would have loved to have been part of writing?

What’s one aspect of it that you loved most?

Price: $75. Applications should reach us at dickinsonchristine5@gmail.com before July 15.

Successful applicants will be notified by July 31.
