Rally and march in Courtenay for old-growth protection

Old growth forests like this one need to be preserved through government commitment.

More than a dozen locally organized public demonstrations will happen on Sept. 28 in front of MLAs’ offices across B.C. as part of a provincewide day of action for old-growth protection.

Comox Valley demonstrators will meet at the Courtenay Courthouse lawn at 3 p.m. for a rally, then march to MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard’s office for a planned 4 p.m. arrival. (Organizers have invited Ms. Leonard to speak at the rally, but as of press time have not received a reply.)

Three years have passed since the B.C. government promised to work with First Nations to implement a paradigm shift in forest stewardship, following 14 recommendations laid out in the Old Growth Strategic Review (OGSR). Yet little progress has been made on this promise.

With the event happening less than a week before the B.C. Legislature returns to session, demonstrators hope to send MLAs back to Victoria with a strong mandate to do more for old-growth forests.
