Brain injury conference June 16 at Crown Isle

In recognition of the important contributions family caregivers make to brain injury survivors and others with long-term health conditions, the Comox Valley Head Injury Society (CVHIS) announces its 18th annual G & B Johnson Brain Injury Conference.

The Caring for Caregivers: Connecting Local Resources to Promote Caregiver Wellbeing in the Brain Injury Community and Beyond conference happens June 16 at the Crown Isle Resort in Courtenay.

It aims to provide educational opportunities for family caregivers, brain injury survivors, people long term health conditions, helping professionals, and others so they may:

• Acquire new insights and skills on caregiving, family relationships and personal health and well-being;

• Hear expert advice for beating stress and depression;

• Learn practical information about the short and long-term planning needs and considerations of family caregivers;

• Connect with local caregiver resources, build personal and professional networks and exchange knowledge with the local caregiver community.

Some of the topics speakers will discuss include:

• Approaches for enhancing caregiver health and well-being;

• Strategies for reducing caregiver burden;

• Strategies for coping with grief and loss;

• Financial planning and income supports for people with disabilities;

• Navigating the health and long-term care system.

“While it’s true that caregiving can be both meaningful and rewarding, the reality remains that many family caregivers suffer from the stresses of providing long term care," says Jeremy Coombs, executive director of the Comox Valley Head Injury Society. "A consequence of this is that many caregivers experience a reduction in their health and quality of life. It’s our hope that this conference will provide participants with new tools and skills to promote caregiver well-being.”

Conference co-ordinator Allison Abraham says family caregivers benefit when they have access to knowledge, resources and community-based supports.

"That is why we have drawn together an accomplished group of local experts to deliver practical and informative presentations aimed at promoting caregiver wellbeing through education,” Coombs adds.

Individuals interested in participating in this conference can register by calling 250-334-9225 or, downloading the conference registration package at www.cvhis.org.
