Three Comox Valley athletes are enhancing and elevating their volleyball skills.

Jordyn Martin, Kenzie Brookshaw and Ella Nixon attended the 2023 Team BC Ignite Volleyball Training camp from Aug. 7 to 11 at Brentwood College School in Mill Bay.

They spent six hours a day training with some of the best coaches in the province, Kelvin Ma (head coach - Camosun College men’s volleyball), Keira Abbott (assistant coach - Former VIU women’s volleyball player/club and high school coach), Alana Muir (Team BC alumni).

All three girls played club volleyball together on the U14 Comox Valley Strikers this past season and took this opportunity to further train to improve their skills and strength in a sport they love so much.

Team BC 14U: Ignite is a training camp designed to introduce and prepare athletes for future experiences in regional and provincial high-performance programs.

Ignite is the athletes’ first encounter with the Team BC high-performance programs. This large-scale high-performance training camp brings 12-14U athletes from each region to train with some of the best coaches in the province.

Athletes focus on enhancing all of the basic skills and will be introduced to advanced skills and tactics, as well as an introduction to beach volleyball (where possible) and how the two games’ skills and tactics are transferable. This is one of BC Volleyball’s most popular programs and challenges athletes both on and off the court with mental training, team building, friendly competitions, and more.

Athletes leave the camp with technical and mental skills designed to support their continued pursuit of high-performance volleyball.

Martin and Nixon both attend Highland Secondary School and Brookshaw attends Mark R. Isfeld Secondary where they all hope to help their junior volleyball teams have a fun and rewarding 2023 season.
