Many martial artists across the province are eagerly awaiting this year’s competition held at Comox’s 19 Wing Gymnasium on May 27.
Adam Morden, organizer of the event and owner of Team Goblin Martial Arts Academy in Courtenay, invites people of all ages and levels of experience to partake in this event that celebrates its 10th year anniversary.
The venue is expecting around 150 fighters, with a significant number of them being children, and aims to provide a memorable tournament experience.
“The main goal is to have a safe, supervised, and family-friendly event where everyone can have fun and gain valuable experience, as well as connect with fellow fighters,” said Morden.
The competition originated from the shared frustration of many parents across the Island who grew tired of making exhausting and costly 12-hour round trips to Vancouver for single fights, Morden explained.
Morden welcomes everyone who practises jiu-jitsu to compete in the tournament. Upon completing their registration, competitors will be classified into groups according to their age, level of experience, and weight class.
Wishing to make this event as efficient and inclusive as possible, Morden opted for a round-robin format. Unlike elimination-based tournaments where participants are sent home after a certain number of losses, round-robin favours multiple encounters, ensuring that all participants compete against each other.
For all jiu-jitsu practitioners out there who wish to partake in the event, the registration deadline is on May 24.
For all those who wish to attend and observe the competition, admission fees of $5 will be collected at the doors of the event.
