New world record highlights Comox Valley finishes at the Cobble Hill 10k

Age group wins, podium finishes and a world record were among the highlights provided by Comox Valley runners at the the Cobble Hill 10K on Jan. 28.

The second event of the 2024 Vancouver Island Race Series was contested on a warm foggy morning – which made for a comfortable race in the picturesque landscape.

The winner of the 10K was Andrew Davies of Vancouver, with a time of 29:32.

Yemane Mulugeta was second place with a time of 30:54. Hot on his heels was Comox Valley Road Runner Aidan Anderson in third place with a time of 31:08, which also put him first in the M25-29 age group.

The top finisher of the women’s race was Glynis Sim of Vancouver, with a time of 33:23.

But the real news was provided by local legend Roz Smith, who broke the world record for the F75-79 age group with a time of 49:11.

CVRR member Andrea Wilson was the top local finisher in the women’s division, with a personal best placing second in the F45-49 age group in a time of 40:53. Cabiri Calisto also had a fantastic race with a ninth-place finish in the very competitive F40-44 age group, with a time of 45:36.

James Fielding finished ninth in the M40-44 division with a time of 36:54.

Derek Brenchley finished with a time of 40:12, which put him in first place in the M65-69 division, and Keith Wakelin finished in 44:06, which was good for fourth place in the same division. Gordon Harris earned fourth in the M70-74 division with his time of 49:22, and Ken Manning earned seventh in the same division with his time of 54:13. Sheila Van Gisbergen finished eighth in the F70-74 age group with her time of 1:10.

Other CVRR members in the race included Cindy Blackmore (1:01); Laura Wyatt (1:02); Maureen McDonald (1:01); Brenda Norn (1:05); Kass Lowe (1:06); and Leah Vecchione (1:11) for a personal best.

The Comox Valley Run to Beer team also had strong performances. Jordan Brietzke was their top finisher with 35:36 - good for fourth in the M35-39 age group. Kim Coscia continued to dominate her races with a 41:28 finish, good for sixth in the F25-29 bracket. Simon Jean finished close on her heels with a 41:29 finish, good for eighth place in the M45-49 division. And Adam Commandeur finished in 41:37. For a full list of results go to startlinetiming.ca.

The next race in the Island Series is the Cedar 12k on Feb. 11 in Cedar. The Comox Valley Road Runners will host the 5k Fun Run, the finale for the 5k Run Clinic, followed the next day by the CVRV Half Marathon on March 24. More information on these events at
