According to reports that swirled through the hockey world on Thursday night (Feb. 13), Penticton's BCHL franchise will move to the WHL as an expansion team.
The report was brought to light by Cam Robinson from Elite Prospects, and also mentioned by Chek's Rick Dhaliwal.
Both Robinson and Dhaliwal reported on X that the Vees are set to pay seven-figure deals to both the WHL to join the league, and Kelowna Rockets because of proximity rights.
According to the Province, nothing is finalized yet but the WHL Board of Governors did meet in Las Vegas on Thursday.
It is unknown at this time when the WHL would initiate the reported expansion.
“The WHL Board of Governors met this week and discussed a variety of topics, including many aspects around the WHL’s future plans," a statement from the league reads. "Although no plans were finalized, we continue to evaluate the changing landscape of junior hockey and consider all strategic options for the league’s future.”
Penticton has been the crown jewel of the BCHL for many years now, they've won six Fred Page Cup championships since 2008 and 13 straight Interior Conference titles.
"We continue to be focused on our season, and the final stretch drive before playoffs," a Vees spokesperson said in an email.
