Joey Ewing and Cameron Knox are helping minor-aged hockey players improve their on-ice performance through skill-specific sessions.

From early-September to late-March, the head coaches of the High Calibre Hockey Academy will be helping players with passing, shooting, power skating and edge control, along with individual skill development, leadership training and conditioning.

And having some fun at the same time.

“This year we’re focusing only on the on-ice,” said Knox, noting previous academies had included an off-ice component with cross-fit and yoga. “We found it was a little too much for some of the guys. We were able cut the costs down considerably.”

The academy includes three divisions: novice atom (7-8 years), peewee (12-14) and bantam midget (15-17). There will be six sessions each month at Glacier Gardens, and an additional Friday session for the older players.

“It’s been really welcomed within the minor hockey community,” Knox said. “We’re taking over the power skating for minor hockey this year.”

Goalie instructor James Harvie will provide goalie-specific training.

Before the 2017 academy, there will be a rep prep hockey camp Aug. 21-23 that is intended to prepare players for the upcoming hockey season. High-paced drills are tailored to help with skating, passing, shooting and conditioning. It includes six on-ice and three off-ice sessions.
