Spending for Courtenay homeless shelter questioned

Dear editor, Do the taxpayers of the Comox Valley really want the regional district to erect a $2.9-million state-of-the-art homeless shelter right at the entrance to our coveted downtown business district? Do those same taxpayers realize that this structure will net a grand total of 10 additional beds, which will provide emergency housing for street people?

Dear editor,Do the taxpayers of the Comox Valley really want the regional district to erect a $2.9-million state-of-the-art homeless shelter right at the entrance to our coveted downtown business district?Do those same taxpayers realize that this structure will net a grand total of 10 additional beds, which will provide emergency housing for street people?Do our taxpayers really want to pay an additional $900,000 per year to operate this facility? Are the Comox Valley taxpayers aware that an additional $250,000 of their hard-earned tax dollars are to be set aside each year for the next five years so that properties can be obtained so that more of these facilities can be built? Are they aware that applications have been made to BC Housing to acquire the Arbutus Hotel (former Howard Johnson on Eighth Street) and Chuck’s Trucks properties so that even more street people can be lured to our vibrant downtown business district? Why is the regional district eager to make our city shopping centre into a destination for homeless people? Now is the time to ask our regional district and Courtenay politicians to fully explain why they are willing to put the needs of homeless people above the well-being of our city.Dick Clancy,Area C
