Dear editor,
Glenn Countryman (Watering lawns is not as wasteful as ice-making machines, Aug. 11 letter) made his case for grass watering during the summer drought.
Those who don’t may find autumn rains turn brown grass green again in October-November. Maybe Glenn’s grass looks slightly better. More important than grass are your deciduous landscape, shade and fruit trees. If they are mature and if they die of drought you could not replace them without spending up to $20,000. Look for signs of water stress: drooping, leaf color/curl/drop, fruit drop. Water regularly like the Town of Comox does on Lerwick centre boulevard. Your trees host small birds, give shade, privacy and enhance your home. Don’t lose them.
