LETTER - Reader refutes comment that Canada is ‘a nation founded under God’

web1_letter-mir-online-231103-rrr_1

Dear editor,

Re. Revoking Aaron Ministry’s tax exemption sets bad precedent for the City of Courtenay (Nov. 8 Letter).

Mr. Hynds says, “Canada is a nation founded under God and one based on peace, order, and good governance.”

I beg to differ.

Canada is a nation founded on the genocide of Indigenous people (see the Doctrine of Discovery) and the theft of their land (see the concept of terra nullius). I

t is also a nation founded on resource extraction to the point of near-extinction (just three examples: sea otters, cod fish, the original forests) and industrialization for the sole purpose of enriching White men to the detriment of all other citizens.

All of that was sanctioned by the Europeans’ God, as interpreted by the men, of course.

Megan Ardyche,

Courtenay
