LETTER - Opportunity for local marinas on the heels of World Oceans Day

Dear editor,
17226061_web1_CVR-Letters3

Dear editor,

We know that oceans are a bellwether for the health of the planet—and that coastal communities and economies, like ours, need healthy rivers and oceans.

With our community’s World Oceans Day celebrations last week and it being high season for recreational boating, the time has never been better for mid-Vancouver Island marinas to reduce their impact on our waterways.

Facilities in Campbell River and Nanaimo have enrolled in an eco-certification program that will support them with making operational improvements to curb contaminants and provide boaters with low-impact alternatives, allowing them to shine as fiscally prudent and environmental stewards.

This week, I will be asking other mid-Island marinas to follow suit.

Michelle Young,

Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean Marine BC co-ordinator
