LETTER: Less consumption of goods is the only way to lower container traffic on the oceans

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

There’s an adage: Be aware that when you point a finger at someone or something, there are three fingers pointing back at you. In other words, rather than looking for ways to blame others, look at yourself and what you can do to help solve the problem.

Case in point: the recent letter to the editor by Tony Powsey (Container ships cause the majority of pollution to the world’s oceans, Oct. 2). He suggests that we blame current environmental issues on the type of fuel being used by large container ships. He states that the solution is to force shipping companies to use a higher grade of diesel fuel. That could help the environment but I contend that there would be fewer freighters plying the seas (and causing untold amounts of damage) if we, if I, consumed less stuff. I can take responsibility. Be the change! Reduce, reuse, recycle. Trade, share, buy secondhand or do without. One person at a time we can make a difference!
