LETTER - Increased remuneration is part of growing as a city

web1_221005-cvr-n-city-closures-1_1

Dear editor,

A letter in the Sept. 13 Record (City of Courtenay’s unrestrained spending habits are unsustainable) lists salary levels for the city’s senior staff members.

Yes, salaries for municipal employees have indeed increased over the years, especially for the managers – and not just in Courtenay. But the increase is nowhere near as large as witnessed in corporate administration, for example.

If the city wants to attract the most experienced and qualified public servants, competitive remuneration is a must. With an operating annual budget approaching $50 million, the city continues to deliver the array of needed services for its 28,000 residents, at a reasonable price, despite severe inflationary pressures and challenging times. Rather than calling out senior staff, I commend them for their continued good work for the growing city.

Tom Pater,

Courtenay
