Dear editor,
re: Comox Valley Hospice Society finds new Ocean Front home (Feb. 28 Record)
How happy I was to see an article in the Thursday edition of The Record concerning the CVHS plans for the construction of a hospice centre and the mention of the generous donation made by Mamie (Catherine Mary) Aitken and her family legacy. Mamie died in 2015 bequeathing two million dollars for the construction of a Hospice Care Facility to be built in the community.
This was a service that she felt was sorely needed. Although Mamie was proud of her Scottish ancestry, her loyalty and love always rested with Courtenay and the Comox Valley and this was evidenced in her generous bequest to the community upon her death.
Mamie was born in the Valley and throughout her lifetime of almost 93 years, she lived a full life. While enjoying a successful career, she was also able to fit in travel, golfing, sewing, cooking, volunteering, painting, music and most especially, dancing, to name only a few of her passions and pastimes. She loved a good laugh and I feel that the announcement of plans for a six-bed facility would bring a smile to her face. In fact, I think she would be dancing.
