Editor’s note:

This letter has been amended to reflect that there was no vote conducted on the issue.

Dear editor,

I was happy to learn that MP Kelly Block sponsored a budget amendment to cut the Governor General’s expenses.

Just a few of the Governor General’s expenses include the following:

• $100,000 for airline meals during a week-long trip to the Middle East (Who eats $100,000 worth of food in a week?)

• $130,000 expense account to buy clothes

• $200,000-per-year expense account for life after leaving office

I was disappointed to learn that our MP, our man in Ottawa, the person put forward to represent the interests of his constituents in Ottawa spoke against the amendment, saying “I would like to know more.”

So this individual, self-admittedly ignorant of the facts, opposed this amendment.

(The committee adjourned without voting on the budget cut.)

A responsible individual would have educated himself on the facts before speaking, but our man in Ottawa apparently thinks we should pay for these kinds of expenses.

His name is Gord Johns.

Mike Grinsell,

Courtenay
