Dear editor,
We applaud the decision to ban herring fishing in 2022, but it’s not enough.
Herring fishing should be totally banned for five years so we can get a good estimate of how the five-year ban affects the sockeye runs, and the health of the orcas and other species that rely on the herring.
The herring caught are only used to provide the roe to market, with the rest of the herring fish being turned into fertilizer.
When you destroy part of the underwater food chain, it will affect all species that exist on the herring.
We have seen the destruction of the cod in Newfoundland’s waters.
When Cabot arrived he said you could walk on the waters there were so many fish. Well, they fished it out.
Let us not do this to B.C. waters.
Syd Burrows,
Comox
