Dear editor,
In the last few days there has been a lot of conversation about a dog park and dogs on-leash in the Northeast Woods.
My wife and I feel that to give up the freedom that dogs and their owners now have in the Northeast Woods would be a huge mistake. To ask dog owners to leash their dogs will restrict the dogs’ ability to freely socialize. Dogs on-leash are also more likely to get into conflicts with other dogs when they are restricted.
The answer to this is quite simple: compromise. Set up a time for dogs off-leash, for example, in the morning until 10 a.m. and in the evening after 6 p.m. At all other times, dogs would be required to be on-leash.
A dog park will cost the city both money and upkeep and will not be welcomed in most neighbourhoods. By implementing this compromise the township will not only save the expense and upkeep of a dog park but will also allow the hundreds of people who walk their dogs off-leash to continue to enjoy the freedom they have had for the last 20-plus years. At the same time, it will also allow those who wish to walk without interference from dogs off-leash to do so.
I realize that this will not satisfy everyone but compromise seldom does that is why it is called compromise. Please take this compromise under consideration.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
