Dear editor,
Unlike the person railing about 5th Street improvements in the Dec. 6 edition of the Record (Fifth Street upgrades an accident waiting to happen), I congratulate the City of Courtenay on taking advantage of funds which were available to make that section of Fifth into a complete street. This is how all major roads in the Comox Valley should look. Space for walkers, cyclists and cars. The separation of the bike lane is especially helpful for cyclists as it takes them away from the main traffic. Some drivers in the Comox Valley seem to believe that roads were made for them only. People also use these roads to cycle to work and for recreation.
I am sorry that this kind of road treatment was not available for the work that was done on 20th Street between Cumberland Road and Willemar. A bike lane would have been a great improvement there. Perhaps we could at least get a painted bike lane or signs asking motorists to share the road. It is time to start sharing the roads and making our valley safer for those who prefer to walk and cycle.
If you don’t like that section of Fifth Street you can always take another route.
