Dear editor,
Body elimination is something everyone has to do and the present situation - one washroom at the Connect Centre - is not adequate.
I encourage everyone involved to continue to do what you are doing to find the funds to start building a washroom facility ASAP.
Shower facilities and laundry would also help so many of the homeless. When on this topic with people, I frequently am told, “well they should go out and get a job!” Just imagine, if you slept in a tent or literally on the street or in the park under a tree. What you would look like in the morning when you head off for an interview? It just doesn’t and can’t happen. People could register for the shower program and be given a time slot and the facility would have to be monitored. Yes, this all costs money but we who have are called to help those who have not.
I empathize with the downtown businesses but a facility such as Connect needs to be close to the other facilities that are also there to help the people in need. This is the area where all those other programs are concentrated so you can’t plan to build new in a location on the outskirts of town.
Homelessness, mental health issues have been on the back-burner of the government for too long. Look at what was accomplished during the pandemic – people helping people.
Let’s do that again!
