LETTER - 29th Street no longer an option for third river crossing

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

The latest announcement that Courtenay city council has allowed Golden Life Management to proceed with the development of a 120-bed senior home on the lot at the bottom of 29th Street has eliminated yet another potential bridge crossing location in the Comox Valley.

Council is painting themselves into a corner on the available options to ease traffic congestion over the river, as the 21st Street option was crossed off the list early with the previous council, as it would interfere with both the Airpark as well as the Kus-kus-sum restoration project.

While the 29th Street location would have been contentious, and more than likely cost prohibitive both financially and environmentally, the long-awaited “Master Transportation Plan” is mere weeks away and would have been worth waiting for to ensure we had all of the facts, transparently communicated to the public, before yet another option was crossed off the list.

I urge the council to look out 25 years, not four, and plan accordingly; traffic congestion is a problem that is not going to be solved by bike lanes and buses alone.

Brennan Day,

Courtenay
