Dear editor,
I read with some trepidation the article Aug. 24 Courtenay property taxes could double without grants for infrastructure projects.
I (and probably many others) am currently at my limit with tax increases. If the federal and provincial governments are not able to stand by their mandates, and a project (say water and sewer) must be completed, perhaps we could look at the 2016 Statement of Financial Information for the CVRD that show an accumulated surplus of $115,425,057 at December 31 2016.
What is this surplus from, and what is it to be used for if not these types of projects? If it is an accumulated surplus from past taxes, I would say we’ve already paid.
