North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney began the fall 2024 legislative session by asking the government to end clawbacks to the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

Blaney spoke during Question Period on Sept. 16.

"The poorest seniors are receiving hundreds of dollars less every year because Liberal policies created another GIS clawback," she said. "This summer I heard from seniors and their loved ones that they are drowning."

"Conservatives cut pensions and increased the retirement age," Blaney said. "Liberals are punishing the poorest seniors. Canadians never win with Liberals or Conservatives. When will the clawbacks end?"

During the pandemic, the Guaranteed Income Supplement was cut for seniors who received pandemic aid, but those monies were repaid in part in 2022.

The Minister of Labour Steven MacKinnon denied clawbacks were occurring.

"Not only does the GIS, CPP, or OAS go up, but it goes up quarterly. There are no clawbacks. We've expanded, actually, the amount of money a senior on GIS might make before any money is clawed back. We've expanded that substantially."
