The man arrested in relation to the crash that killed a Nanaimo soccer administrator has died in custody.

Michael Allison Rennie, who was 60 when he was arrested in 2024, has died, B.C. Coroners Service and B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General have confirmed to the News Bulletin.

The ministry, in an e-mailed statement, noted that the individual, who had been in prison at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre, died Wednesday, April 23.

Rennie was charged with failing to stop after an accident, criminal negligence causing death and dangerous operation of a vehicle after a crash that occurred on the Nanaimo Parkway the night of July 19, 2023. Reid Davidson, who was 24, died in the incident.

B.C. Coroners Service and B.C. Corrections are investigating the incident.

“The B.C. Coroners Service’s investigation will look to determine how, where, when and by what means the individual came to their death,” the ministry said. “For its part, B.C. Corrections will conduct a review into the circumstances.”

In February, Rennie elected for trial by provincial court judge and a pre-trial conference had been scheduled for Friday, April 25, in Victoria.

Due to privacy laws, B.C. Corrections is unable to release any further details, as any information is confirmed by the B.C. Coroners Service and considered personal information, the ministry said.
