School District 71鈥檚 gifted program was showcased last weekend as 10 teams (four elementary, two middle, and four secondary) attended the Destination ImagiNation Vancouver Island regional tournament in Campbell River.
All teams were invited to attend the provincial tournament April 16 in Richmond.
Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School sent two senior teams to the tournament.
As part of their Unidentified Moving Objects challenge, Ice I (Maggie Bird, Evan McMillan, Damian Parlee, Braela Pearce, Colin Walker and Alisdair Yamagishi) were expected to design and build equipment to move various materials to and from towering heights. They also had to create and present a sales promotion highlighting the features of their equipment.
Ice II (Josh Duncan, Ethan Glenwright, Melissa L鈥橦eureux-Hache, Sam Merrick, Forrest Picher, Katarina Smith and Kyle Vaags) competed in the Mythology Mission.
They were given only five minutes to create a five-minute improvisational skit about a mission involving a mythical creature. Their skit incorporated research they had conducted about a culture from a country, three randomly selected souvenirs, and an unexpected problem that they encountered on stage.
There was also a surprise instant challenge, and Ice 2 received a rarely given perfect score. Both Isfeld teams won their divisions. They learned a lot by participating in the regional tournament, and plan to make a few modifications before heading to the provincials.
