To the victor goes the spoils. To the loser goes the opposition's jersey. And that was precisely the outcome of the Mayors' Cup hockey game, held early Monday morning at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

Comox Mayor Paul Ives' team defeated Courtenay Mayor Greg Phelps' squad 6-4 in an entertaining tilt, with the trophy going on display at Comox town hall while Phelps had to wear the Comox team's jersey to Monday night's Courtenay city council meeting.

The game was organized by Dr. Paul Helpard of Shoreline Orthodontics in Courtenay, and he was a member of the winning Comox (where he resides) team. Helpard is actively involved with the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies Team of B.C. He works at Children's Hospital once a month to provide consultation services and interdisciplinary treatment planning with numerous medical specialists.

He is also involved with Spring for Kids BC, a Canadian non-profit organization that supports children with cleft and craniofacial disorders by providing funding for education, research, surgical missions and the continued care of patients and their families.

Spring for Kids BC is participating in the Pepsi Refresh Contest. Every other month, Pepsi is giving away up to $200,000 in grants to fund great ideas that can make a positive impact in the community. Spring for Kids is competing in the $100,000 grant level, and to win they need to have the most online votes in their grant level.

The Mayors' Cup was designed to raise awareness of Spring for Kids BC's participation in the Pepsi Refresh Contest, and voting booths were set up at the Sports Centre.

To vote online, and for more information about the campaign, go to www.springforkidsbc.com. “This event is a fun way for us to let everyone know that they can make a difference simply by voting once a day, every day,” said Helpard. “We're currently ranked fifth, and after this event, we’re expecting that votes from the community of Courtenay will push Spring for Kids up in the rankings.”

Kathy Campbell of Shoreline Orthodontics notes people are encouraged to vote online every day from now until April 30. There are weekly draw prizes of movie passes and a grand prize of an iPad. "The more you vote, the more likely you are to win," the Spring for Kids BC website notes.
