The G.P. Vanier Secondary School Megan Dalziel Memorial Bursary Committee would like to congratulate Amina Turner for being selected as the 2023 recipient.

The award is presented annually to a deserving graduating student who has demonstrated school and athletic leadership, character and athletic and school service.

Megan Dalziel was a three-sport athlete at Vanier, a strong academic student and great ambassador for Vanier and the Comox Valley. She achieved her teaching degree at UVIC and led the UVIC Vikes women’s basketball team to two National University Championships; she sadly passed away in 2019 from cancer.

The Megan Dalziel Bursary Committee is hoping the memorial bursary will inspire girls to aim high and assist the recipient in offsetting post-secondary schooling/training costs.

Amina Turner has been a consistent ‘A’ student who has contributed significantly to her high school and community. At Vanier, Turner was a member of student government (Minister of Female Athletics), Vanier’s Rotary Interact Club, founder of Vanier’s female weight-lifting club, as well as being a member of the Sr. Girl’s volleyball, basketball, soccer and rugby teams.

Besides helping out on her family farm, Turner has held part-time jobs to help finance her post-secondary aspirations and has still made time to participate in community service events such as the Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk and involvement with community groups such as Lush Valley. Her future plans are to attend UVIC in the fall and study Earth and Ocean Sciences.

The Megan Dalziel Bursary Committee would also like to thank donors to the bursary as the intent is to make the bursary a perpetual one. In order to do so further donations of any amount are welcome and can be made to: Megan Dalziel Memorial Bursary c/o S.D. 71 (Comox Valley), 607 Cumberland Road, Courtenay, B.C. V9N 7G5 (Attn. Cathie Collins).

Donors should include name and addresses for a tax receipt.

Coach Carrie Watts of the UVIC Women’s Basketball team has announced that the UVIC Women’s team will be playing an exhibition game at the Vanier gym in Courtenay this fall (date to be announced) with all funds collected at the door (by donation) be forwarded to the Megan Dalziel Bursary. Plans to offer an afternoon basketball clinic put on by the Vikes woman’s team are also being considered.
