Residents passing View Royal's town hall building will see yellow and blue colours flying alongside the Canadian flag.
On March 4, council approved replacing the Victoria suburb’s flag with Ukraine’s.
“I think that’s a small but significant symbol of our support for Ukraine and the large Ukrainian community we have the Western Communities,” said Coun. Don Brown, who submitted the motion.
Following Russia's wide-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, other communities across the country have made similar moves.
Brown explained his family ties to Ukraine also helped inspire the motion.
“There’s a personal interest, as well,” he said. “He's passed away now, but (my grandfather) was a minister and he moved to Winnipeg from Ukraine. I have that in my genes.”
He also noted the show of support comes at a good time – just days after U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on live TV.
“I think most people were disgusted,” said Brown.
View Royal council voted to fly the Ukrainian flag last year, but staff removed it after it became tattered. A replacement was never hoisted in its place – a move Mayor Sid Tobias criticized.
“The flag should have never been taken down,” he said, adding staff don't have the authority to contravene council's decisions. “Your resolution does not go away, does not have a time expanse.
The flag will fly until View Royal decides otherwise.
