A motorcyclist has been hospitalized after a crash at Courtenay’s Ryan and Back Road intersection.

RCMP on scene said there were believed to be “serious injuries” for the motorcyclist, who collided with a vehicle. The cyclist was hospitalized, while the driver was unharmed.

Media relations have now confirmed the motorcyclist is an 80-year-old man who lives in Comox Valley. RCMP did not have an update on the man’s injuries or condition.

As the crashed motorcycle was blocking Ryan Road going downhill, the intersection was closed, and drivers were being forced to turn right at the bottom of Ryan Road hill westbound. RCMP said they were working to minimize the downtime, estimated to be a few hours.

The intersection was listed as one of Courtenay’s most dangerous earlier this year. ICBC released crash statistics, showing that the intersection saw the fourth-highest number of crashes last year.
