Beginning tonight and through Jan. 2, BC Hydro will increase its release from the Comox Dam from about 33 m3/s to approximately 60 to 100 m3/s in anticipation of storm events.

The increased spill magnitude presents dangerous conditions along all sections of the Puntledge River, and danger signage is in place to highlight the risk.

So far for December, inflows into the reservoir have been 70 per cent of normal but the forecast for the next seven to 10 days are trending above normal. Inflows are expected to increase over the week and peak this weekend with an average daily maximum inflow of 110 to 160 m3/s.

The Comox Lake Reservoir level is approximately 133.4 m above sea level and is expected to rise. The increased water release from the Comox Dam helps manage the reservoir level and maintain operational flexibility for flood risk management during storm season.
