Strathcona Nordics win pennant

Strathcona Nordic Ski Club hosted the regional Teck Coast Cup final events #4 & #5 last weekend at Mount Washington.

The weekend of events included participants from the Bunny and Rabbit Skill Development Program, racers from the B.C. midgets and seasoned, top-form athletes in their last race before next week’s Cross-Country Ski Nationals in Canmore, Alta.

Teck Coast Cup #4 was an Interval Start Classic Technique with distances ranging from one kilometre  for atoms to 5 km and 7.5 km for women and men respectively. This allowed racers to show their form individually and over distance.

Strathcona Nordic/BC Team junior boy Tallon Noble raced superbly in the fastest time of the day, with Hollyburn/BC Team junior girl Anna Goodwin skiing the 7.5 km course in winning time.

Teck Coast Cup #5 was a Team Sprint Free Technique Skier Cross Relay held on a fun, rolling and twisting course.

Atoms started at 250 m. while the older, most experienced raced three laps up to 650 m each lap.

This new format showcases technical strengths on different elements, strategy with sharp corners and endurance with hills and repeated laps.

In Sunday’s relay event, Strathcona Nordics swept the podium in the Juvenile Boys Category with the Lightening Chickens (Aiden Noble and Ross Lamon) in first, the Rainbow Pidgeons (Gabe Gledhill and Matthew Salmon) in second and the Thunder Turkeys (Stephen Lamon and Tallon Noble) in third. All athletes hail the Comox Valley.

The Juvenile Girls Category had an upset win with Campbell River’s Anna Chatterton racing up a category with Victoria athlete Amelia Wells in the Poppin Penguins team.

The club aggregate pennant for the Teck Coast Cup Series was awarded this year to host club Strathcona Nordics with a narrow win over last year’s winners Hollyburn.
