March 16 looked like a normal day in Cedar, with cows, sheep and horses all grazing in their fields, until around 300 runners went by.
That date marked the Bastion 12k race put on by the Bastion Run Club out of Nanaimo. After being rescheduled a few times, Comox Valley athletes joined the runners as they hit the rural course.
For the Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR), the first finisher was DeVonte Scarlette, who crossed the finish line in 41:32, which earned him fourth place overall and first in the M3034 division. Adrian Becklumb finished in 49:00, which was good for first in the M6064 division. Derek Brenchley finished close behind him with 50:06, which was good for first in the M6569 age group. Rob Kelly finished right behind, with a time of 50:06 for second in the M6969 age group. Keith Wakelin finished in 52:44, which was good for second in the M6569 category. Wayne Crowe finished in 55:05, which earned him first in the M7074 age group. Ken Manning also placed third in the same age group with his time of 56:46.
Kim Hall was the first CVRR woman to cross the finish line with the amazing time of 58:41, which was good for sixth in the F4044 age group. Briana Pauze finished in 1:04:04, which was also good for sixth in the F2529. Maureen McDonald finished in 1:11:14, which was also good for sixth place in the F6064 age group. Laura Wyatt also finished in 1:18:00, which earned her ninth in the F6569 category. Leah Vecchione (1:47:33) also ran.
Run to Beer (RTB) fielded a team. Brad Pryce was the first finisher with his time of 47:10, which was good for 4th in the M3539 division. Kim Coscia ran 49:44, which earned her first in the F2529 category. Adam Commandeur finished in 49:53; good for sixth in the M3034 age group. Kieran Waterous finished in 49:57, which was good for sixth in the M2529 category. Amanda Fox finished in 55:37; earning sixth in the F3539 division.
Other RTB finishers included Rob Allen (57:21); Michael Nesbitt (57:57); Steven Fournier (59:17); Toby Voss (1:01:14); Laine Bergen (1:01:53); Mark Crisp (1:03:02); Vanessa Wilson (1:03:12); Brynn Legault (1:04:10).
The overall winter was Dusty Spiller from the Cowichan Valley Running with his time of 40:08 and Julia Tschanz of Speedfarm, with her time of 44:57.
